Top 15 SEO Tips To Rank On The 1st Page Of Google

Good SEO is all about giving Google what it wants. So, by giving Google what it wants, Google returns the favour by sending traffic our way.

Top 15 SEO Tips To Drive Traffic To Your Site

Tip #1 Use Short URLs

Yep, Google loves short URLs. I’ve noticed while using Yoast is continually telling my URLs are too long.

When I first started SEO, I’d use the first URL that popped into my head which usually led to long ugly URLs that were not SEO friendly. Today I make sure, and when I forget the Yoast plugin reminds me, to only use short URLs because all things being equal short URLs rank better than long URLs!

Tip #2 Using Amazon For Keyword Ideas

I bet you didn’t know you can use Amazon for keyword research? Using Amazon for keyword research is easy. First search Amazon for a popular book in your niche. Next, check out the books table of contents as each chapter is a potential topic for keyword ideas. Finally, pop the chapter titles into your favourite keyword research tool to see if they get searched for in Google.

Tip #3 Optimize your title tag for CTR

You should know by now to include your target keyword in your title tag, but what you might not know is that you also want to optimize your title tag for CTR (click-through rate). There are two reasons for doing this. The first is by improving your CTR you get more traffic without needing higher rankings. For example, let’s say that you rank number four for your target keyword. If you double your CTR, you increase your traffic.

The second reason is that Google recently stated that they use CTR as a ranking signal, and this makes sense if you think about it. If people click on your result, it sends a clear message to Google that this page is an excellent result for this keyword, and they’ll give you a ranking boost. The bottom line is to optimize your title tag not just for keywords but for CTR as well. I’ll show you exactly how to boost your click-through rate later in this post.

Tip #4 Publish content over 1890 words

The Yoast plugin always warns me when a post is less than 300 words, so I’ve still accepted that as a minimum. But, why specifically 1890 words? A study has shown some interesting findings. More specifically, that longer content tended to rank better than short content. The study showed, on average, the first-page result in Google contained 1890 words! Which goes against the idea that people online have short attention spans. In reality, when you create a high-value resource, people will want to read it even if it’s incredibly long.

Tip #5 Use title tag modifiers

Believe it or not, most of your search engine traffic comes from very long, precise searches. For example, someone searching for a new pair of slippers might have several specific keywords in their search. e.g. “Best Blue Fluffy Slippers Size 10 Free Shipping” How to optimize for so many keywords when most keyword search tools don’t allow for it? The answer is to add modifiers to your title tag. Some useful title tag modifiers are the current year, best review, free shipping and checklist. So using your title tags, to get those people looking for the above search your title would look something like this. ‘The Best Blue Fluffy Slippers (Free Shipping)’. With a title tag like this, you’ll rank for your target keyword fluffy slippers and dozens of longtail keywords.

Tip #6 Use keyword-rich URLs

Using keyword-rich URLs is an extension of Tip#1. We already know that Google likes short URLs, so make sure your URLs contain your target keywords.

Tip #7 is to use numbers in your title tag to boost CTR

Earlier I mentioned how Google uses your site’s click-through rate (CTR) as a ranking factor. If heaps of people click on your result, it sends a clear message to Google that this page is an excellent result for this keyword which results in a rankings boost. The question is, how do you improve your CTR? The easiest way to get more clicks on your result is to add a number to your title tag. According to a recent industry study, titles with numbers get 36% more clicks than titles without a name. That’s why this post’s title is ‘Top 15 SEO Tips and not Top SEO tips.

Tip #8 Use two-step email outreach

Backlinks are essential for ranking in Google. Not any old backlinks but whitehat backlinks from authority sites in your industry. An excellent way to do this is by email outreach, but there’s a right and wrong way to do email outreach. Spam emails begging for links is the wrong way. A two-step email outreach is a way to go. Let me explain how two-step email outreach works. Most people would usually send out an email asking for a link back. The recipient generally ignores this email. Instead, try a two-step approach. The first email asks if the blogger would like to see, as an example, his infographic, asking for their opinion on it. When they said yes, he followed up with a link pitch, and the two-step approach led to 40% more responses than straight-up asking for a link.

 Tip #9 Broken link building

Broken link building is one of the best white hat link building strategies. Here’s how it works. First, find a site that you want to get a link from. Next, find a broken link on that site and the easiest way to find broken links is to use the excellent check my links Chrome extension. When you find a broken link, look for a piece of content on your site that would make a suitable replacement for the dead link if you don’t have something that would make a suitable replacement feel free to create one. Finally, email the site owner to let them know about their broken link and when they get back to you pitch your link as a replacement. That’s all there is to it.

Tip #10 Choose keywords with strong commercial intent

In SEO, the worst thing you can do is choosing keywords that have zero commercial intent. Commercial intent is the likelihood that someone’s searching for a giving keyword will buy from you. An example is someone searching for premium yoga courses has a much higher commercial intent than someone searching for free yoga videos. You can quickly size up a keywords commercial intent using the Google Keyword planner. The higher the estimated bid, the higher the commercial intent. The bottom line is, yes a keyword search volume and competition are essential, but before we decide on a keyword, make sure it has at least some commercial intent.

Tip #11 Delete underperforming pages

Top 15 SEO TipsA while back, a webmaster trends analyst at Google said something significant. “Don’t create low quality and no value add pages… we think that it’s a waste of resources.” Poor quality content won’t get quality traffic, and if you don’t get quality traffic, then why are you burning resources on creating poor content. In other words, having lots of excess pages on your site that does not bring in traffic is bad for SEO. Therefore, deleting pages on your site that don’t bring in any traffic improves your SEO.

Tip #13 Optimize your videos around video keywords

You’ve probably noticed how YouTube dominates Google’s first page for so many different keywords. 45% of all Google search results contain a YouTube video. But that also means that 55% of Google’s results don’t include a video, so why is this important? If you’re trying to rank your videos in Google, you need to make sure that there are already video results for that keyword. Otherwise, your video is unlikely to rank in Google. So, before deciding on a keyword for your video, search for that keyword in Google. If you see a YouTube video on the first page, you’ve just found a video keyword. But if you search for your keyword and don’t notice a youtube result, then you might want to choose a different keyword to optimize your video around.

Tip #13 Use Reddit for keyword research

Reddit is a great place to find untapped keywords, keywords that your competition doesn’t know about! Where else can you find a site where people discuss almost every topic under the Sun. Here is an example of how to use Reddit for keyword research. Let’s say you run a site that sells paleo diet meal replacement bars. You search Paleo diet in Reddit and then check out any subreddits or threads that cover that topic. When you see a topic covered, again and again, you have a keyword that you should examine. Place that keyword into your favourite keyword research tool to see how many people search for that term in Google. Then rinse and repeat.

Tip #14 Link out to authority websites

An SEO agency in the UK recently ran an SEO experiment where they created ten brand new websites all optimized around the same made-up keyword file, Phlandocic! The ten sites were all set up the same way except five of them had one significant difference, they contained outbound links to authority websites, and sure enough, the five sites with outbound links ranked above those that didn’t have any. The bottom line, link out to authority websites in every piece of content that you publish.

Tip #15 Hack Wikipedia for keyword research

Just like Reddit, Wikipedia is a keyword research goldmine. The following is the best process to use to find amazing keywords on Wikipedia.

The first step is to type in a topic or keyword into Wikipedia’s search box. For example, if your site publishes content about coffee, you’d want to type coffee into Wikipedia’s search box. Then examine all the links that appear on that page. These links contain great keywords

The second step is to examine all the articles on Wikipedia that appear in the ‘table of content’ section. The links in the content section also contain excellent keyword ideas.
