My daughter is not quite 18 and she’s had her first ever car accident. She was driving home from school in her mother’s car when this old bloke coming in the opposite direction decided to cut in front of her. Even though she slammed on her brakes and took evasive action she was unable to avoid colliding into the oncoming car.

It wasn’t her fault but she was still pretty cut up about it. I assured that the only thing that mattered was that no-one was hurt and that was all that really mattered. She was worried about her mother’s car but I explained that the insurance would take care of that. Sort of makes you wonder how some people don’t bother to insure their cars.

the accident also served as an important lesson, one to do with speed. As I explained to her things could have been so much worse if she was doing more than the speed limit. I’m sure that lesson is well ingrained into her psyche now.

I’m glad she was uninjured, Sire, but 18 as your first accident has to be kind of scary. I had my first accident at 26, I think, and I was freaked for years. Then again, I could have been killed, so that might be somewhat different.

Yeah, that would be different, luckily hers was rather minor. I remember my first major accident; I wrote the car off, went to hospital that day to get checked out and then back to work the next. Not time to be freaked out.
